nice post, i;ve always heard about avg, but never used it, i think ill try it once my norton subscription runs out

I think the best way dealing with softwares downloaded from the internet is to scan 'em with multiple antivirus softwares. You can visit virustotal.com to upload the files you want to scan. I think it's much safer to scan it w/ more than one antivirus software than depending on 1 antivirus.
