View Full Version : Changing your New Member Welcome Email

This is a little tweak that is often overlooked because we as admins rarely see it, and almost never pay attention to it when we do..

The stock welcome email that comes with vBulletin is pretty boring. It reads:

Email Subject: Welcome to $vboptions[bbtitle]!

Email Body: Dear $username,
Thanks for registering at $vboptions[bbtitle]! We are glad you have chosen to be a part of our community and we hope you enjoy your stay.
All the best,
$vboptions[bbtitle]

Pretty boring. It also does little or nothing to help your forum. You sould consider changing it. How you change it will depend entirely on you. For example, in my case, on my car forums, I include a blurb that tells a little about my other car forums and invite the new member to take a look at those sites as well.

A few ideas would be to point new users out to specific eatures on your site... Such as encouraging them to post photos in a gallery, use the arcade, etc.

the other thing I do, that may or may not apply to you, is to encourage the new member to join our "Gold Membership" - which is something I charge $30 a year for and entitles the user to a variety of benefits such as discounts from selected car part's vendors, increased PM storage, etc.

Use your creativity. Write something that will encourage members to use parts of your site or to generate income for the site. Encourage them to post in your new member's forum, or to complete their profile.

Dont forget to change the email subject line as well. Something simple but a little more interesting.

To find the welcome email:

Admin CP -> Languages & Phrases -> Search in Phrases

Search for "welcomemail" in the Phrase Variable Name Only.

To change the email subject, choose edit for Email Subject Text Phrases Containing 'welcomemail'
To change the email body text, choose edit for Email Body Text Phrases Containing 'welcomemail'
